Carlos Garaicoa
Cuban contemporary artist
Carlos Garaicoa (born 1967, Havana) is a preeminent Cuban contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice includes photography, installation, sculpture, drawing, and text. Initially trained in thermodynamics, he shifted to art studies at Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte (1989–1994) . Garaicoa’s work critically examines urban decay, post-revolutionary architecture, and ideological structures, often using the cityscape of Havana as a metaphor for political and social fragmentation—seen in projects like “Talking Buildings” and his puzzle-like photographic sculptures . Internationally recognized, he has exhibited at documenta 11, the Venice and Havana Biennials, and major institutions such as MOCA Los Angeles, Tate Modern, and the Guggenheim, and his work received the Prince Pierre de Monaco Prize (2005) . Now living and working between Havana and Madrid, Garaicoa continues to merge aesthetic precision with socio-political critique in his ongoing exploration of urban imaginaries
